Well, I went to see The Family Stone staring Dermot Mulroney, Diane Keaton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes and Rachel McAdams, and all I can say is…I liked it. Right off the bat though, and without being too incredibly mean or insensitive, I must say that Sarah Jessica Parker is not aging well. Just so you know I never thought she was all that pretty in the first place, she kind of looks like a skinny well dressed George Washington. Now, before you “Sex in the City” fans get all pissy, I want you to know that I like Sex in the City, the show and the real thing. I am not into fashion all that much, but I do appreciate that she wore very cool shoes. I understand, and still if you will take a moment to look at her with me you must at least concede that Mrs. Parker is not aging well.
Okay, now that we have laid that issue to rest lets actually talk about the movie. Here’s a layout of the story. The Stones have their annual holiday gathering. The eldest son brings his girlfriend home to meet his parents, brothers and sisters. The bohemian Stones greet their visitor–a high-powered, controlling New Yorker–with a mix of awkwardness, confusion and hostility. Before the holiday is over, relationships will unravel while new ones are formed, secrets will be revealed, and the family Stone will come together through its extraordinary capacity for love. That synopsis really gives nothing away. But there are more twists to this story then you might think. I was surprised at how touching and romantic and at times sad that this film was. Though it has plenty of cookie cutter moments, the acting and story bring you in. You almost know how it’s going to end but you just don’t care because you’re enjoying the ride.
I really liked this movie and I can just about guarantee that if you like romantic comedies then you will like this movie too. Sometimes it’s nice be surprised, but sometimes you just want to have fun and forget about the real world. I had fun, you will too. Go see this one, it’s worth it.
