This is a little late in coming. I was sure Irondude was going to write a review of this film. In his absence or maybe just procrastination I will stand in. Just incase you don’t already know, this film is based upon the Avengers team found nestled happily in the Ultimate Universe of the Marvel continuum. It is a more adult take on a team that needed to be brought into the light of day, or more appropriately into the darkness of reality. In this Avengers team we see real human issues including, greed, violence, alcoholism and death.
The story for this first Ultimates movie revolves mostly around Captain America. He is a man out of time as we find him resurrected into our world after a long frozen sleep. Here’s the synopsis: In 1945, humanity was on the brink of annihilation as sinister forces pushed to seize control of the free world, and only one man rose up to stop them. When a nuclear missile was fired at the Capitol, Captain America managed to detonate it in the upper atmosphere, but in the process he sacrificed himself, falling miles into the icy depths of the North Atlantic, where he remained lost for over sixty years. Now, with the world facing the very same evil, Captain America must rise once again as the last hope for survival, and lead a strong-willed team of today’s superheroes.
The Ultimate Avengers was a very strong first effort at bringing The Avengers into the animated realm. I thought that portions of this film dragged a bit but the finale action sequence is worth the wait. The acting was done very well but the animation felt rushed as if they were trying too hard to hit a deadline; that being said, this was a great effort and certainly worth your consideration. The cool thing is that you can watch the trailer to the sequel on the DVD. I think they have the right idea here and I hope that marvel along with Lions Gate entertainment will follow this series with more of our favorite teams and characters.
