brettIsaac of Hero Spy: First I would like to say I am a big fan of your art and thanks for the interview.

Brett Booth: No problem, sorry this took so long. My mind wanders frequently.

Hero Spy: When would you say you realized you could be doing art as a profession?

Brett Booth: Well I decided when I was 13 that this is what I wanted to do; of course I’m having second thoughts now

Hero Spy: I am a major fan of your Thunder Cats drawings, is that your favorite stuff to draw?

Brett Booth: I did enjoy drawing the original revamp design. The Dogs of war was just work. I got to do some new designs but it wasn’t what I really wanted to do with the characters. I was a big fan of the show when I was a youngin’, In fact we tried to get WS interested in the project in 94. But, they only wanted to do superhero stuff, the greatest failing of Image was to only do the mainstream stuff, that and not putting the books out

Hero Spy: I love the colored art, it is especially awesome, and so what would be the tools you use?

Brett Booth: Well, all the colored stuff on my DA page and Blog are colored by either myself or Jess. We use Photoshop 7, Jess used to use Painter 8 but we can’t find the darn program anymore. I learned how to paint from Jess, it was something I never wanted to do because of all the time it took. But the computer is so nice, no chemicals, no messy paints. Just a wacom tablet!
Hero Spy: Do you have any art training, a school you attended?

Brett Booth: I have an AA degree in Commercial Art. But on top of that I did get to learn from some of the best comic artists out there (you’d think I’d be better at this!) at WS and Homage. Jim Lee, Mark Silvestri, Whilce Portacio, and of course Jess Ruffner and Joe Chido for colors.

Hero Spy: Do you use any references such as models?

Brett Booth: Not for the people part, but for any animals or dinosaurs I use whatever I can find. I use a lot more reference now than I used to, Cities, cars, guns, and lately movie projectors for Frankenstein. Every gun on Anita had to be referenced so I finally learned how to draw a proper gun

Hero Spy: Your Vampire Hunter Pages are extremely cool, how long would a painting like that take, oh and I will be sure to put a link to the video?

Brett Booth: I’m not exactly sure what your asking here. Are you talking about the covers Jess colored? I didn’t do any color work on Anita, I don’t like to color people much. Jess colored some of the covers, the ones that looked more painted. Those would take 3-5 days to finish.

Hero Spy: I would also like to know what tools you use for your sketches. What would they be?

Brett Booth: 5mm 2h pencil, kneaded eraser and the little grey erasers that come on the mechanical pencil. That’s about it. Sometimes a triangle for strait lines. Very minimal. I basically do a quick rough sketch, then I erase it some with the kneaded eraser then go back and do the finished picture. It’s all pretty automatic now. My dogs recently stole my pencil and chewed it up, I got a new on but it wasn’t the same exact one. I had the worst time trying to draw the little details, luckily I found a new one that’s excactly like my old one.

Hero Spy: Who would you consider to be a great artist?

Brett Booth: James Gurney, Gregory S. Paul, Mike Shrepnik, I don’t read comics anymore so I’ll stick with the paleoartists

Hero Spy: When you are not drawing what take up your time?

Brett Booth: Reading, Playing with the dogs, working on the house and playing on the computer. You give me some meat and potatoes with an iced tea and I’m happy

Hero Spy: Do you do commission work?

Brett Booth: Not anymore. I don’t really like to do them. I’ll still trying to finish off some of the old ones. I have to be inthe right mood for it and I haven’t been. It’s annoying. If I force it it will look like crap.

Hero Spy: If you want you can send me a drawing, if you want.

Brett Booth: Any specific kind? And does it have to be mine

Hero Spy: I am guessing you are a movie viewer; are there any movies you are looking forward to?

Brett Booth: 10,000 BC, Indy 4, Batman the Dark Knight, Iron Man looks pretty good. The new Stargate movies. I’m more a TV guy. Theaters are too loud now. I’m waiting to see new episodes of The Big Bang Theory, Chuck, House, Bones, Psych, Eureka and Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles. There is a 3-D dinosaur thing I’m waiting to see and I wish they’d have done a Flash movie with Ryan Renolds, he would have been prefect as Wally West. There’s supposed to be a new Joss Whedon show but that’s all I know on that.

Hero Spy: Are there any Projects that you are now working on?

Brett Booth: Right now I’m penciling Dean Koontz’s Frankenstein for DabelBrothers. I’m also working on a dinosaur art book and an Anthro art book in my spare time. I’m doing most of the dinosaur book myself colors, text, Jess will be doing the design work on it and editing since I’m pretty incomprehensible. Jess will be doing the colors and writing on the Anthro book. They won’t be terribly long but they will be all us. No ugly colors screwing things up, now unattractive page layouts. Something nice for a change.

Hero Spy: I always ask this question at the end of my interviews
Finally, what would be your favorite Fast Food Joint?

Brett Booth: Hmmmm.. That’s a toughy. Well I like In-n-Out Burgers a lot, but they don’t have any here in Texas. So I guess my favorite would be Chick-fil-a. I don’t like that they are close on Sundays but there isn’t anything I can do about it. I’m liking subway right now and of course Chinese.
