Years back I wrote a really cool script for what I felt was a very interesting and original comic. I took my script down to Kinko’s and had multiple copies printed and spiral bound with a nice title etched on the cover. This was going to be my year at the San Diego Comic Con, I just knew it. I was going to shop that script around the massive Comic Con floor and I would be discovered; maybe not by Marvel or DC, but possibly by Ape Entertainment or Dynamite.

I passed that script out for two days with not even a thank you or a smile in return. Finally on the third day I was thrown a bone. I approached the IDW Publishing booth with a look of desperation that had glazed over my once optimistic face and had an incredibly eye opening conversation with one of the editors there. What he said was simple but left an impression “Comics are visual” he said “Your script is just a bunch of words on paper. Bring me a finished comic and I’ll take a look”

If you want to sell your comic, you better at least have a couple finished pages. This is your resume, this is your calling card – this is pretty much mandatory if you want to find a publisher. These days there are number of options for small press. You can hit a site like Lulu.com and have your book printed on demand for a reasonable price. To shop your comic creation you must first prove that you are a comic creator.

A script is a beginning, and it turned out that the Comic Con was a good place to be in the end. I stopped pitching my script to the comic book publishers. I headed for artist ally and started pitching it to the artists. The next year I showed up to the convention with a comic book – my comic book…and a new perspective.
