Double Jumpers is a geeky, roll playing, cornball, Lord of the Rings style comedy adventure. You can call it a gee-ro-co-lo-co-ad if you like.
The story opens on a gaming convention and a panel of programmers working on the next huge gaming platform. Virtual reality gaming in a “World of Warcraft” type venue and it’s going to be huge. The problem, the game is wrought with bugs and if the team can’t fix them before the deadline, they can wave their jobs goodbye.
In an effort to hunt for glitches the team assembles in their Las Vegas hotel room to dive into the gaming realm. While inside the game the mother of all switcharoos occur and the team finds itself stuck in the virtual world while their digital counterpart’s psyches assume their bodies and take Vegas on like barbarians.
And hilarity ensues.
Okay, maybe hilarious is pushing the box open a little wide, it’s hard to stick a label that big on this package, but I will say that Double Jumpers is fun. In fact it’s a lot of fun.
The nods to the Lord of the Rings are obvious and silly. The jabs at the industry and those adoring fans that follow it with such intensity are worth a chuckle. And when it’s all said and done, the premise is kind of cool.
Dave Dwonch and Bill Blankenship have put together a comic that looks good and reads well. I especially like following the characters stuck in the game. I have a feeling there are some hairy events awaiting them.
Double Jumpers succeeds. It taps into the ridiculous and immersive world of the hardcore gamer, and then steps back to giggle at the absurdity of it all.
