Rob Leifeld: A Lifetime of Bad Artwork
By Shawn Swanson On 27 Aug, 2012 At 10:23 PM | Categorized As Art, Featured, Featured Artist | With 2 Comments

I just finished reading a post from the website ProgressiveBoink.com listing the top 40 worst Rob Liefeld drawings to date. The language used is pretty rough, so I wouldn’t recommend it to a young teen, but seeing Liefeld’s artwork posted and openly critiqued made me laugh out loud a number of times.

The man is a “self taught” artist, and it shows. I had never taken the time to really look at his work, and to be honest it’s shockingly bad.

Here is a quote I especially liked from the aforementioned post “Rob Liefeld is still getting commissioned to do work for both major comics’ publishers. He is one of the most successful, recognizable, well-known and popular comic book artists in history despite being difficult to work with, egotistical, contrary and missing deadlines on a consistent basis. He has made more money than most of us will ever see in our lifetimes. He still cannot draw a foot.”

Recently Rob cut ties with DC. How in the world did he ever get a contract with DC in the first place? I believe this man may have sold his soul to the Devil.

You all need to go over and check out Progressiveboink.com right now. Here is just one of the 40 top drawings they chose along with the writer’s commentary.

This is by no means the worst art that Rob Liefeld has ever subjected the world to, but it is the most blatant example of how little a f$%@ he gives about every aspect of his “craft”, the industry, and above all, the reader. We’ll ignore the elephantie Strong Sad leg that he’s given Franklin Richards in the first panel, and the billowy 90s wide-neck T and feathered ‘do, despite this comic actually having come out THIS YEAR. Look at Franklin’s hands in the first and second panels. I have made a lot of jokes about this sort of thing up to this point, but I think this is finally concrete evidence.

Rob Liefeld drew this ENTIRE page of a comic book before realizing that Franklin was supposed to be holding a gun. Then, instead of using Photoshop or altering his existing art, he DREW IN a gun behind his hand on the first and second panels, then called it a day. LOOK AT THE HANDS. THERE IS NO WAY HE EVER INTENDED FRANKLIN RICHARDS TO HAVE A GUN.

About - Preferring cats over dogs, and spending an inordinate amount of time researching comic books and comic book related news, Shawn Swanson is more of a geek than he claims to be, and 6 years of comic book journalism is a testament. Can I get an AMEN?!!!

I would not call it bad artwork, perhaps inaccurate and uncomfortable.

This seems a bit overly passionate and hateful. I think the writer has a secret crush on Liefeld or something. So much wasted energy hating someone. Draw your own comics and then compare them.

This is about the funniest shit I’ve ever read. To be honest it’s deserved, because to be paid this kinda money and draw this fucking horribly pisses me off. It was fun when I was a kid, but now, I’ve had art classes and draw all the time and I blow this shit outta the water BUT I can’t get a pro drawing gig, Rob IS making a career out of drawing at the level of a junior high student. I know it’s all about timing, but shit after 25 years 25 YEARS if you love your craft you WILL get better at it. He is actually staying the same and getting worse in some respects.

Mcfarlene and Sylstri aren’t any better to be honest, they just don’t SUCK as bad at drawing as Rob does. I hurts to say that, because I loved his shit when I was a kid. Sorry Rob but you really really REALLY need to step back and learn some stuff.

Women standing on tip toes… I can’t fathom how that is physically posible in any realm or realty except for floating in space.
