Superheros to Cinema is a new series of posts to keep you up on the comic-to-film scene. This week we have news on the new “Powers” TV series, all the way to the “Scott Pilgrim” feature film.

He-Man Masters of the Universe

John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) is all set to direct the feature film “He-Man Masters of the Universe”. This film has been in what they call “development hell” with some websites claiming that the movie was in the trash can and would never be made. Wizard Magazine reported this month that He-Man is alive and well over at Warner Bros and is being produced by Joel Silver.

So there is some good news for all you He-man geeks.

“Powers” to be TV Series on FX

It was announced at the New York Comic-Con that FX was producing a live action TV series based on Brian Michael Bendis’s comic “Powers”. Brian’s comic tells the story of Homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim as they investigate murders specific to super-hero cases. This comic was made to be a TV series, it’s like Law & Order meets Batman.

MTV reports

“‘Powers’ is in active development as a pilot at FX,” Bendis told MTV. “I just handed in a draft to the network and we’re getting our notes from the network as soon as this thing is over. So next week I’ll get the notes, and as long as they don’t involve sock puppets and some sort of orgy scene that I’m not interested in, then hopefully it will go in the right direction.”

“But they’re a very smart network,” added Bendis. “It seems like the right place for it to be.”

Preacher

Not much news on the Preachers movie. Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road) is still slated to direct. John August the writer of “Big Fish” is currently writing the script for the film. I have waited for a long time to see this very rated R movie and I will not give up hope.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World

Based on the Oni Press Series about a sheepish boy who must defeat his girlfriends seven x-boyfriends in order to win her heart, is on its way to a theater near you. Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright is hard at work on the film whose cast will include Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), and Brandon Roth (Superman Returns…DUH!”).

It looks like Scott will hit theaters later this year….so….YAY!

Where the Wild Things Are

I know, this movie isn’t really a comic book, but I really want to see it, so I’m cheating the format. Shoot me.

“Where the Wild Things Are” – the movie – follows the adventures of Max, a head-strong young boy who leaves home after having a fight with his mother — only to find himself in a mysterious forest bordering a vast sea. Misunderstood and rebellious, Max sets sail to the land of the Wild Things, where mischief reigns. The adventure film “Where The Wild Things Are” uses a unique process to bring the story to life, incorporating the most dynamic elements of voice performance, live-action puppetry and computer animation.

Spike Jonze’s 1999 movie “Being John Malkovich” was a crazy romp, I would imagine that Spike’s eye for unusual filming will translate well in this film.
